October 16th, 2009Organizing FinancesChoose a System for Your Finances
You must get things organizerd; therefore, you will need to decide what sort of system you’re going to use to track your financial information. One of the best and most well known system is Quicken. But, there are many other computer programs that work just as well. Wesabe is an excellent free web-based solution, just check it out.
Or, just remember, you can also keep track of your spending with pencil and paper. All kinds of people still use this system because people did this for hundreds of years before the advent of computers. Lots of people still tracks their finances this way. There is definitely no one best choice — the system you decide to choose should be one that you will use..
Simplify, simplify, simplify your Finances
If you are barraged with bills and receipts and notices., all that paperwork can make you get overwhelming! Therefore, it is important to simplify our financial life by reducing the amount of paper you have to deal with. Below are some easy way to do that:
- Do not open any new credit cards, and work on paying your present balances down.
- Then just take a step further and stop or reduce the —tide of junk mail (you can never eliminate it) using the Direct Marketing Association’s own mail preference service..
- You may consolidate accounts where possible; thereby, reducing the number of credit cards you carry. If you do have bank accounts at multiple locations, you can combine them at a single bank. Remember, the fewer accounts you have to track, the easier it is to stay on top of them.
- You will need to cancel accounts you no longer use or pay them off may be a better choice (closing certain accounts can give your credit score a temporary ding). You may find that the extra paperwork from unused accounts just creates clutter, and clutter makes it difficult to focus on the task at hand.
- GRS readers may praise automatic transactions. But does your employer allow direct deposit, this may be helpful? Can you pay your insurance company on line or can you pay all your bills online may be help-ful. You may be able to set up automatic investments into your IRA. Remember, automatic transactions make life simpler.
You must manage your money on a regular basis. You have to have a system and designate a space for your finances. You will need to perform daily, these tasks should only take about ten minutes. Do not say “I can’t bring myself to do my finances every day; I do them weekly, and it takes me about 30-45 minutes” this will not work.
You will find that regular maintenance allows you to pay your bills on time. It will also gives you a dedicated time to check your statements on your bills. . (It is so important to check your statements so that you’re not blindsided by something on your bills.
You will find that if you go longer than two weeks before entering my information into your system, (Quicken is a great system), it is a frustrating experience for you. At times, you will invariably forget some important transaction. But, when you track every penny you spend, you accumulate a lot of data. Your finances will get out of control if you don’t take care of your finances regularly.
Keep everything in one place for your Finances
It is so much easier to take charge of your finances , if you have a dedicated space for working with them. Just find you a small cubbyhole next to your computer where you can tuck every bill or receipt that you bring home. Or, you might select a notebook and tucks all of your information. Or, you might, scans your financial documents into your computer and stores them in a specific folder. Just remember, whichever method you choose, keep the area clean, use it only for finances , and be sure to put all your documents there.
You may find that separate locations for old receipts and for tax documents is a good idea. You could put old receipts in a shoebox (yes, really). When the shoebox is full, justg move it to permanent storage and a new shoebox takes its place. This may seem silly, but the system works. You could keep this year’s tax documents inside a manilla envelope tucked in your money cubbyhole. Then you can file last year’s tax documents . Always shred old financial information when it is no longer needed.
You will find that tracking your finances is not a difficult job, but it can be intimidating to begin. I really encourage you to make the effort, because it is worth it. When you get your finances organized this is an excellent first step toward other financial goals: debt reduction, saving for a downpayment, or investing for retirement. The most important thing to do is just start doing it, whichever method you choose.
